My friends and I (all college students) want to go to New York for Spring Break. We arent the crazy Cancun type so New York suits us better. Every hotel we want to stay at has a minimum check in age of 21 and our oldest is 20. Does anyone know of any hotels that we could stay in that are clean, safe, affordable (willing to pay around 225 per night), and do not require us to be 21? I started looking at hostels but they scare me because some dont even have doors and you need to stay with other people who you dont know. Please, someone help us!

Traditionally Chinese medicine relies on the model belief that the human body is an energy system, consisting of seven chakras located through the body on a horizontal line from the Root chakra on the genitle area up to the Crown chakra at the top of the head. The New Age movement has created an increased interest in Western cultures including the chakras. Some people in New Age practices claim that there are chakras, besides the seven major ones, for instance, ear chakras. Although it cannot be proven that this is entirely untrue it is certainly up for debate.

People from the East and West who study or tap into the chakras energy system know that there is a correspondence between the position and role of the chakras, and those of the glands in the endocrine system. Each chakra is responsible for different aspects of the body just like each organ is responsible for its own functions.

The chakras are described in the tantric texts as Sat-Cakra-Nirupana, and the Padaka-Pancaka, where they radiate an electrical consciousness, an energy which pours down from the spiritual like the suns rays. They then create these distinct levels of chakras (simular to oil settling on top of water), which eventually settle in the Muladhara (root) chakra. This energy that came into creation, called the Kundalini, will lie coiled and sleeping until it is taped into through tantric yogi, reiki or meditation to arouse the energy, and encourage it to flow back up through the increasingly subtler chakras, until union with god is achieved in the Sahasrara (crown) chakra at the top of the head.

It is believed that the energy of the chakras is continuously flowing (like a stream), if it is not respected and given the proper care then the energy can become blocked (by a dam). For instance when a child gets and ear ache it could be caused by a number of things ranging from physical illness or a damaged ear drum. But physicians tend to over look the chakras energy system which could be blocked causing the tissues in the ear to break down. To ease the discomfort in the child’s ear many doctors will mask the pain with medication. But the inflammation can be reduced simply by placing a hand over the ear and concentrating on the corresponding chakra. As the energy pulses through the blockage it will allow the body to heal naturally.

In the end it does not matter which set of beliefs you follow, all that matters is that you treat your energy centers with the same care and respect that you would treat any other part of your body. when you can find balance in your life it becomes much easier to focus less on the negative and more on what is positive.

Connie Limon asked:

Medical researchers have proven that high levels of folate can slow the cognitive decline usually seen as people age. This research was presented at the US-based Alzheimer’s Association’s first conference on prevention of dementia. Folate is definitely instrumental in anti-aging techniques for the brain.

The research suggested that otherwise healthy people can slow declining brain function by taking double the recommended daily dose of folate.

Scientists studied men and women 50-75 years of age taking 800 mcg of folate a day over a three year period. They found the group scored much better in cognitive tests than their peers who took the placebo. The supplement users also scored higher on memory tests as much as 5.5 years younger than their chronological age.

The study is the first to convincingly show folate can slow cognitive decline and plays a key role in anti-aging techniques for cognitive functioning. Since the study involved healthy older people and not people with Alzheimer’s symptoms, it does not tell us if folate might ward off that disease. This is an important question still unanswered.

Earlier studies suggested folate combined with other B vitamins can reduce levels of homocysteine, which is an amino acid thought to be one of the causes for onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers think we ought to be more conscious about the health of our brain very much in the same way we think about the health of our heart. Alzheimer’s disease begins many, many years before symptoms appear.

The researchers of this study say it is not clear how folate works to protect the brain. It might be that it lowers inflammation or plays a role in expression of dementia-related genes.

Oranges, strawberries, dark green leafy vegetables and beans are good sources of folate to include in a daily anti-aging diet. Folate is also added to cereal and flour products in the United States

.

The recommended daily dose of folate in the United States is 400 micrograms. Doctors have long advised women of childbearing age to take folate supplements to ensure they get an adequate daily dose.

This new research adds to the mounting evidence that an anti-aging diet higher in folate provides protection against a variety of diseases. For a long time now, scientists have felt folate plays a role in dementia. Previous studies show people with low folate levels are more at risk for heart disease and decreased cognitive functioning.

Research also now suggests there are anti-aging ways to protect the brain against age-related memory losses and Alzheimer’s disease. There are classes being offered by the Alzheimer’s Association to teach people techniques to protect the brain. Some of those techniques include:

?Exercise the brain: In youth, exercise for the brain is acquiring good education. As a person begins to age, excellent anti-aging brain exercises include working crossword puzzles, learning to play an instrument or the game of chess and taking classes helps to exercise the brain.

?Social stimulation helps prevent decreased cognitive function

?Physical activity: Having a bad memory has been linked to heart disease and diabetes due to the clogged arteries that slow blood flow to the brain. Exercise is helpful to all these functions.

?Experts recommend doing something mentally, physically and socially stimulating all at the same time. An example would be coaching your child’s ball team or taking a dance class.

?A heart healthy anti-aging diet is also good for brain healthy anti-aging.

Paul Rodgers asked:

Assuming that everyone leaves their home, it becomes inevitable that we will on a daily basis become exposed to unavoidable environmental factors which can cause premature aging of the skin. Many of the same environmental insults that cause medical skin conditions also contribute towards the over all appearance of the skin with respect to aging. Over time, the aging process destroys the natural supplies of Hyaluronic Acid, causing skin to dry and wrinkle. The question then becomes what can we do to slow down the appearance of the skins aging process and how can we prevent further signs of aging from occurring.

Aging

Aging brings with it the realization that their skin will no longer have that youthful appearance. By reducing oxidative stress, restoring moisture, repairing signs of photoaging, and promoting healthy supportive tissues, these topical agents can literally turn back the clock on skin aging. There are many anti-aging skin care treatments, techniques and of course products available today to help you diminish the appearance of wrinkles, eye bags, dark circles and age related ******.

Anti-aging skin products cannot produce a 100% reversal of wrinkles, but using certain treatments will greatly improve your skin’s appearance. To help aging baby boomers actively restore the youthful look of their skin, researchers have developed powerful new ingredients that take the science of skin care to a new level. If you have deeper wrinkles that you would like to minimize, there are many other treatments to consider.

Treatments

With multiple treatments fine lines and wrinkles, scars, pore size, and skin changes can be improved. There are cleansers, toners, serums, creams and treatments for every imaginable skin care concern. There are antibiotic treatments, which affect the skin from the inside, that she prescribes in cases of problem skin, though treatment is usually the first step. Oxygen treatments have found themselves increasingly popular across many countries.

The Oxygen Facials

The oxygen ****** has been steadily growing in popularity since it was discovered that combining oxygen with certain anti-aging ingredients enhances cosmetic results. Anti-aging ******* use products and techniques designed to slow the aging process, brighten skin, and reduce wrinkles. This treatment increases cellular respiration, enhances micro-circulation, fights premature aging, and it brings you a blissful sense of calm. Oxygen ******* and oxygen skin care born from the anti-ageing medicine. By treating the skin with pure oxygen, you are restoring the nourishing elements that are not available in our environment as we know it.

Non invasive skin therapy treatments are now the right answer to people looking to keep healty and prevent skin ageing. Oxygen ******* are designed to improve the appearance of your skin by renewing skin cells and fighting the bacteria that causes acne. Oxygen ******* may also help reduce fine lines as well as protect skin from sun damage and everyday stress. Oxygen ******* are also used to treat burns and redness in the skin. As a result, your skin looks and feels firmer for a couple of days. Pure oxygen ******* are the next big thing with celebrities such as Madonna, Sienna Miller and Kate Moss already reportedly converted to the new way to combat wrinkles and let your skin breath.

Conclusion

Please remember, preserving youthful skin is much easier than trying to repair skin that has been abused for years. Maintaining a beautiful, healthy and youthful skin is therefore very important, especially for women and girls. Skin care today is a very exact science providing us with a wide selection of treatments and supplements to counteract and slow down the aging process. The key to prolonged youthful skin is prevention, prevention, prevention.

Al Sears, MD asked:

Last month I spoke at an anti-aging conference in Las Vegas. At the conference I was able to present research on a topic that I am very excited about, TA-65.1

After my speech people in the audience surrounded me - asking question after question about TA-65. Even other doctors certified in anti-aging had never heard of this remarkable new anti-aging therapy. I was shocked by the response.a One of the doctors from the audience even started referring to the TA-65 approach as “Dr. Sears’ theory.”

I told the crowd about my own personal experience taking TA-65—my vision has improved. I am mentally sharper and most importantly, I feel healthier.

They finally realized that there is an alternative to hormone and antioxidant therapy for aging.

Geron Corporation and TA Sciences are on the verge of taking the health problems associated with the aging process—and making them a thing of the past. In fact, it’s already happening. And there are steps you can take to put the brakes on aging, right at home and right away.

During my presentation I offered the results of over 12 years of research on telomeric activity, showing that many age-related conditions are directly connected to the shortening of your telomeres.

Telomeres are a part of your DNA. They are the caps on the ends of each DNA strand and ensure your DNA isn’t damaged during cell division. Every time your cells divide, your DNA loses a little bit of the telomere, or protective caps. At some point, telomeres get too short and can no longer support cell division. The result of this can be the various conditions associated with old age.

The enzyme telomerase supports cell division. Telomerase enables the cell to divide indefinitely by adding back the bit of telomere lost during each cell division.

The problem most of us have is that the telomerase enzyme is turned off, and therefore not helping to secure the telomeres on our DNA strands.

The new anti-aging therapy, TA-65, “turns on” the gene that makes telomerase.

Most people only think of genes as components that determine basic body features like hair, skin and eye color. But they also play a role in your health. How your genes express themselves has a profound effect on your future. If you control how your genes express themselves, then in theory, you can turn on genes that lengthen your life and turn off genes that lead to chronic diseases associated with aging.

TA-65 affects genes related to aging and cell division. But if you don’t have the ability to visit my office or one of the very few other doctors licensed to practice TA-65 therapy, you still have the opportunity to influence gene expression.

The supplement resveratrol also influences the way genes are expressed. Resveratrol has the ability to activate anti-aging genes called sirtuins. Sirtuins transmit signals to every cell in your body that literally cancel out the effects of aging. They bring the processes that lead cell death to a crawl, buying your body more time to repair the DNA damage that brings life to an end.

For years we’ve been looking for another way to turn on these “longevity genes.”

Resveratrol is found in plums, grapes, blueberries, cranberries, and other plants.

Resveratrol has been shown at times to extend the life span of yeast and mice.2 In studies conducted on animals, resveratrol was found to switch on the genes that repair DNA damaged by free radicals, fight inflammation, support healthy glucose metabolism and promote cardiovascular health.*

You can benefit from the gene expression power of resveratrol right away. The problem is how to get enough of it.

I recommend adding foods rich in resveratrol to your diet. Wine and related beverages are a particularly good source of concentrated resveratrol. Here’s a list of high-content wines:

Beverage Total Resveratrol (mg/L) Total Resveratrol in a 5 oz glass (mg)

Muscadine wines            14.1–40 2.12–6

Red wines (global)    1.98–7.13 .30–1.07

Red wines (Spanish)    1.92–12.59 0.29–1.89

Red grape juice (Spanish)  1.14–8.69 0.17–1.30

Rose wines (Spanish)    .43–3.52 .06–0.53

Pinot Noir            .40–2.0 0.06–0.30

White wines (Spanish)    0.05–1.80 0.01–0.27

The problem lies in getting sufficient amounts of resveratrol. As you can see from the chart you’d need to drink 1,000 to 3,000 glasses of wine to experience the life extending benefits of resveratrol. Resveratrol supplements are a better option. They’re inexpensive and completely safe. You can find them in health food stores or on line. I recommend taking around 10 mg per day.

To Your Good Health,

Al Sears, MD

John Harricharan asked:

It is incredible how emotions can distort one’s perception. Through my anguish it appeared to me that Earth life was made for suffering, that one had to eke out a meager living, do the best possible and then die. In moments of desperation, that is how we think. But then again, when all around us seems to go right,we perceive the world as a wonderful place in which to live, and feel blessed to be a part of creation. Choosing not to recall our own past problems,we fail to understand how others could suffer so terribly with theirs. We therefore proceed blindly without giving much thought to the suffering of others. I was feeling rather sorry for myself and,to me, this is always a sign of giving up. But it’s not my nature to give up.

The next day, bright and early,I prepared to go to the hospital again. This time I took only Malika with me, leaving Jonathan at home in the care of visiting aunts. The day seemed no different from many others, but I was beginning to sense a deepening river of sadness within me. A drive that normally took an hour lasted only forty-five minutes, yet I wasn’t conscious of having driven faster than usual. Only a few days earlier, I’d told a friend that I felt whatever was happening was certainly increasing in speed.

As soon as we entered the hospital room, Mardai looked at Malika and commented, “What a pretty dress you’re wearing.” By this time, her pain was extreme and her breathing was more difficult than ever. Nothing seemed to be helping her. I left for a short while to take Malika back home, and when I returned, the situation had become worse.

Sometimes we believe that medicine can always perform miracles; at other times we want to damn the entire medical profession for its inability to help. On this, which was to be my last visit with Mardai, her parents and I stepped out of the room to confer with the doctors.

Macronutrients

Origins and History

Food is the basic resource of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that allow our body to do its daily performance. Our ability to eat foods and then extract the proper nutrients is what allows us to gain both energy and the building blocks for our immune system and other bodily functions. To understand human nutrition we must begin with the basics, that is, the building blocks and the chemical structure of food. Some reeducation is useful to help realize that many of the foods that we buy in food stores, fast food chains, and in health food stores may not actually be healthy for the human body. No longer may we overlook terms such as complex carbohydrates, simple carbohydrates, processed foods, refined grains, caffeine ingestion, alcohol consumption, and refined oils..(Macronutrients) Food intake and type have a profound effect on individual health. Although the ingestion of foods may not cause any acute deleterious effects on the health for humans, the long-term effects have been clearly documented in the literature. (Macronutrients)

As we cross the line into the new millennium, physicians and other health care providers need to consider how to effect change in our patients with less emphasis on the use of synthetic drugs and other chemical concoctions. Nutritional literature supports a growing realization that food could have a significant contributory factor in many of our chronic ailments of today, including cancer, collagen vascular diseases, arthritis, and even progressive aging. Our patients are spending billions of dollars on diets like high protein, low carbohydrate, low fat, low protein, Paleolithic, blood typing, zone, starvation, food pyramid, allergic disorder, caloric restriction, and juicing diets. Unfortunately, none of these specialized protocols is universally ideal. Individualized treatment and prescription of the appropriate diet is essential for the improvement for a patient’s nutritional status. (Macronutrients)

Dave Kettner asked:

Many professionals with medical training are now involved in researching possible approaches to anti aging medicine. Through the wonders of modern innovation and medical technology, anti aging medicine may be able to increase the body’s immune system and encourage cell growth and regeneration. Anti aging medicine can be found in different substances and formulas and are beneficial to a degree. It’s a safe bet there will be many more to choose from in the near future, as anti aging medicine gets more and more advanced.

Anti Aging

Aging is defined as the collection of degenerative diseases that is large influenced by lifestyle. In order to give full meaning to the right to “life” we need a “war on aging”. We are therefore at an unprecedented turning point in the study of aging, in which the curiosity-driven, exploratory research that has justifiably monopolized the field until now can at last be legitimately accompanied by goal-directed, biotechnological efforts, rationally designed on the basis of solid scientific knowledge. Anti-aging medicine has emerged in recent times promising increased longevity with improved quality of life. Anti-aging physicians believe that most illnesses associated with aging can be prevented, or at least slowed, through optimal cellular health.

Medicine for Anti Aging

Anti-Aging Medicine is the new medical discipline which aspires to halt the degeneration and disability normally associated with aging. That style of anti-aging medicine can, indeed, work miracles. Alternative medicine and holistic approaches have often been an incubator for approaches initially shunned by traditional medicine. Though the effort has seemed futile in the past, findings from the cutting edge of medicine indicate we can, at the dawn of the 21st century, do much to optimize how we age. You might not know that there are natural medicines that can treat your thyroid disease just as effectively as pharmaceutical drugs without the side effects.

Health and Vitality

If mankind doesn’t destroy itself first, it is just a matter of time until we extend healthy human lifespan to lengths that are almost unimaginable today. Once healthy life-extension is demonstrated in mice, the attitude that “aging is inevitable” will no longer be possible and will give way to an all-out “war on aging”. Living a healthy lifestyle is the best insurance you can have, not only to avoid nursing home care, but also illness and frailty, however long you live. Restoring hormones in the body to more youthful levels can elicit improved health and vitality. Learn about natural ways to stay young and healthy and combat premature aging.

We’re discovering that some foods have potent healthful properties that we never imagined were there. A healthy human individual is automatically on an anti-aging program, which is why they live longer. Perhaps in another 100 years, compounds will be identified, studied and proven to be extremely helpful to human health, but in the meantime, they remain mystery compounds that are outside the understanding of modern medical researchers. The real question here concerns “health enhancement,” because enhancing your health will reduce your apparent age and make you look, feel and act younger. Anti-aging medicine can do very little for someone unless the whole patient is making a shift towards a healthier, non-toxic lifestyle.

Connie Limon asked:

Waste Accumulation Theory

The waste accumulation theory of aging states that in the course of a life span cells produce more waste than they can properly eliminate.  The waste includes various toxins that when accumulated to a certain level they can interfere with normal cell function and ultimately kill the cell.

Limited Number of Cell Divisions Theory

This theory is concerned with the number of cell divisions directly affected by the accumulations of the cell’s waster products.  As more wastes accumulate over time the cells quickly degenerate thus causing aging and ultimately death.

Hayflick Limit Theory

Dr. Hayflick theorized that the aging process was controlled by a biological clock contained within each living cell.   Studies done in 1961 concluded that human fibroblast cells (lung, skin, muscle, heart) have a limited life span.  They divide approximately 50 times over a period of years and then suddenly stop.  They also concluded nutrition seemed to have an effect on the rate of cell division.  Final conclusion of this theory states that improper functioning of cells and loss of cells in organs and tissues may be responsible for the effects of aging.

Death Hormone Theory (DECO)

Brain cells or neurons are unlike other cells in that they do not replicate.  At birth we have roughly 12 billion of them and over a life time about 10 percent die out.  Dr. Donner Denckle speculated that as we age the pituitary begins to release DECO which inhibits the ability of cells to use thyroxine.  Thyrozine is a hormone produced by the thyroid-governing basal metabolism, which is the rate at which cells convert food to energy.  The metabolic rate brings on and accelerates the process of aging.

Thymic-Stimulating Theory

Dr. Alan Goldstein says “the thymus is the master gland of the immune systems.”  The size of the gland continues to reduce and shrink to round three grams by age 60.  Scientists are investigating the possibility that the disappearance of the thymus contributes to the aging process by weakening the body’s immune system.

Mitochondrial Theory

This is the free radical theory is supported by directed experimental observations of Mitochondrial aging.  Our primary source of energy comes from ATP.  Mitochondria are the energy-producing organelles in the cells that produce ATP.   They produce cell energy by a process that leads to forming potentially damaging free radicals.  Evidence seems to tell us that various kinds of accumulated DNA damage over time contribute to disease.  New research in mitochondrial repair could play an important role in the fight against aging.

Errors and Repairs Theory

Dr. Leslie Orgel suggested in 1963 that because the “machinery for making protein in cells is so essential, an error in that machinery could be catastrophic.”  Since the system is incapable of always making perfect repairs on these molecules, the accumulation of flawed molecules can cause disease and other age changes to occur.

Redundant DNA Theory

This theory is similar to the error-and-repairs theory in that it also blames errors accumulating in genes for age changes.  A difference is that as these errors accumulate the reserve genetic sequences of identical DNA that take over until the system is work out.
